About Southern Co-op

Putting u in Southern Co-op

We’re an independent Co-op, operating across the south of England running convenience food stores, funeral homes, crematoria, natural/woodland burial grounds and a Starbucks coffee franchise.

We’re owned by our members, have over 4,500 colleagues and a purpose of working together for the benefit of our communities.

We were founded in Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1873 as a response to the societal challenges of that time – exploitation, inequality and life-threatening poverty – with a vision of creating a business that would help people to help themselves and meet the needs of all, rather than a few rich shareholders.

While some of these societal challenges unfortunately still exist today in one form or other, alongside environmental challenges like climate change, our response remains the same.

Community

Our Love Your Neighbourhood (LYN) programme supports and encourages involvement in our local communities, to create safe, healthy, happy communities where we live and work. LYN is based around 4 key themes: Greener, Safer, Healthier and More Inclusive neighbourhoods.

We're committed to creating an environment where each and every colleague can be themselves. We value different perspectives and encourage everyone to take opportunites and grow to be the best they can be irrspective of age, disability, gender, marital status, race, religion, sexuality or values.

Wellbeing

We want every colleague to feel happy, healthy and fulfilled. We strive to create an environment where colleagues are supported in their mental, physical, financial and social health and wellbeing.

Sustainable Development Goals

We recognise the importance of championing a better way of doing business and doing the right thing by both people and the planet. To do this, we take a collaborative approach with our customers, members, suppliers and partners.

We’re committed to supporting the global goals (UN’s Sustainable Development Goals), described as the world’s ‘to-do list’, focused on addressing the world’s biggest challenges and a call to action to end poverty, protect our planet and ensure everyone can enjoy peace and prosperity.
